You Never Know Who You’re Going to Meet

I’ve been in Arkansas for 15 years this month. It was just a few year after my arrival I met Lanny Beavers. Mutual friend Mike Capshaw connected us with the intent of working on a major print project.

The project fell through, but I gained a trusted confidant, and eventually we did work together. Through the years I’ve had a front row seat as Lanny has grown Hogville.net into much more than just the gathering place for a few close friends.

I’ve also seen Lanny, an surveyor  by trade, delve headfirst into the media business. He credits me as helping him break in. In 2002, I was doing some work for a small sports station in Sherwood. I introduced Lanny to station general manager Arlen Horne, and soon Lanny launched a radio show.

That’s also where he got to know young program director Shawn Arnell, and then THV weekend sports anchor Wess Moore. The pair have become friends with Lanny and worked with him on different projects.

Since that time, Lanny has had a hand in different radio and television projects and handles the Pulaski Academy radio broadcasts with play-by-play man Jay Jones.

What do Bret Bielema and Houston Nutt Have in Common?

At first blush, it appears Bret Bielema, and Houston Nutt have little in common. However, the two coaches are linked in Razorbacks history in a small way.

Both share a common opponent in their Hog debuts. In 1998, Nutt, the Little Rock native, led the Hogs to a 38-17 win against Southwestern Louisiana.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema hopes he doesn’ joint former coach Frank Broyles as the only Hogs coach to lose a debut.

Fifteen years later, the Bielema Era begins with Louisiana-Lafayette.  A lot has changed in that time, including the name of the school. The Ragin’ Cajuns are also a better program, coming off a 9-4 campaign, which includes a bowl game win.

As the season opener approaches, and Bielema’s popularity has risen with his #1-0 philosophy and pep rallies around the state, I thought about 15 years ago. Long before half the fan base wanted to kick his butt out of the state, Hog fans were excited about Nutt.

I was in the press box for Nutt’s debut. In fact, it was the first of many Razorbacks football games I covered. After growing up in Iowa, it was my first game in SEC country. … Read more >

UA Center Swanson Thankful for Bielema

No matter Arkansas’ record in 2013, Bret Bielema and his all-star staff should bring some semblance of order and stability to a program that was the biggest train wreck in college football in 2012.

In an exclusive story published in the Aug. 28 edition of Sync Weekly, UA  senior center Travis Swanson says Bielema made an instant impact on the Hogs.

Travis Swanson is ranked as the No, 1 center in the nation.

“I met with [Bielema] a ton, more than I have ever with any other coach,” Swanson told Sync contributor Evin Demirel.

It appears Bielema and his staff has done the right things to instill confidence in a team that was bruised and battered. As a whole, the staff is personable and treat kids right. That’s evident in talking with recent signees Drew Morgan and Hunter Henry, who rave about the coaches as people.

So, whether it’s 4-8, 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 or the unthinkable 8-4 or better, Arkansas is on the right track.

That’s great news for true freshmen like Henry, Morgan and standout running back Alex Collins, who figure to be a part of something special befor

Sun, Sand and …. Baseball

When I head to our annual vacation spot at Orange Beach I look forward to sun, sand and great food. Now, I have something else to look forward to — baseball.

On Sunday we made the short drive to Pensacola Beach to eat lunch at a restaurant my sister-in-law, Lisa suggested. As we entered the Pensacola city limits I noticed a large baseball stadium. Hundreds of cars were already parking along Main Street by the bay.

Pensacola Bay Front Stadium is a beautiful place to watch a baseball game.

A quick Google search informed me the that Pensacola Bayfront Stadium is in its second season and is the home of the Class AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos, a Cincinatti Reds affiliate.

I also noticed the Blue Wahoos finished their home slate with a game on Monday and Tuesday. My wife, Sheena, and I decided to make the trip over Monday night and check out this jewel of a park.

We arrived a little late, but still found ample $3 parking in a grass lot across from the stadium. As we started to walk across the street the attendant flagged down the free shuttle to take us to the main gate. The … Read more >

UL Coach Hudspeth Expecting Trenches to Decide Game

Bret Bielema hasn’t coached a game at Arkansas and Jim Chaney hasn’t called a play, but Louisiana-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth is pretty sure physicality will be the name of the game when the teams meet Saturday.

The Louisiana-Lafayette coach specifically mentioned the battle at the line of scrimmage and points to the new Razorback’s coach reputation at Wisconsin.

“The success they (the Badgers) have had has just been phenomenal,” Hudspeth told The Advertiser in Lafayette. “Now to get a call to come to the SEC – he’s doing some things that are right.

“Plus, to me, he’s doing it the right way. He’s trying to be a physical, tough football team, and that’s what he was at Wisconsin.”

When Bielema took the job, he emphasized that the Hogs’ offense may not be a carbon copy of the Wisconsin game plan. Chaney’s Tennessee teams had success passing the ball and mixed it up.

However, Hudspeth is probably right. Arkansas may pass the ball more later in the season, but with an inexperienced quarterback in sophomore Brandon Allen, and with an unproved wide receiver corps, the Cajuns should see a healthy dose of the run.

“I think this game is gonna be … Read more >
